Marion Monroe Edwards
Marion Monroe "Dick" Edwards was born October 3, 1879 in Gallatin County, Illinois and died Feb 7, 1959, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was buried in Pine Log Cemetery, Brookland, Craighead County, Arkansas.
Dick was married February 2, 1905, in Success, Clay County, Arkansas to Miss Emma
Elizabeth Philour, born April 1, 1889, in Illinois. Emma died March 28, 1958 in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN. Her mother was Zadie Boutwell.
When they married she was almost sixteen and he was twenty four. A note, written and signed by "Sadie" Quigley, her mother, giving permission to marry, was with her marriage license.
In 1916 Dick and Emma Edwards lived on twenty acres west of Success "between the rivers." The twenty acre farm was part of a forty acre parcel they shared with Aunt Norah's family. They farmed at Success, Clay County, Arkansas, where their children were born and attended a "country school" called, "Hovey School."
On his farm at Success Dick also operated a sorghum mill, which he used to process cane for other farmers. The Hudsons brought their cane to Dick's mill to make their cane into sorghum (molasses). That's how the Edwards came in contact with the Hudsons.
About 1930 they moved and eventually settled on a farm near Paragould, Arkansas where they raised cotton and peanuts. While visiting Edwards in 1942 I rode to the cotton gin with "Grandpa Edwards" on his cotton wagon, full of cotton, pulled by two big mules.
Dick and Emma were members of the Pentecost Church and attended services in Success.
